“It is a fact that the
“Banda Artística de Merza”
(founded in 1828) is the
oldest of all popular wind
bands in Galicia. And it is
also a fact that we are
neighbours, of the same city
council of Vila de Cruces
and of the same district of
the Deza river. When we were
kids, we all felt immense
joy listening to “the musics”,
like we said at that time,
that made each festival
pleasant. The charm of the
toccatas, the uniforms with
the emblem of the silver
plated lyre, the glittering
of the brasses… Everything
attracted us. Then, as young
boys, we danced in the
festivals and the very first
love arose among waltzes,
mazurkas and paso dobles. I
danced many times to the
music of this Band.
One
day I followed the path of
the emigration. I took with
me, like we all did, the
memories of the festivals
and the music. I returned to
these lands twenty-four
years later and it was
destined to be that the
first wind band that I
listened to was that of
Merza. A very touching
reunion. It was like the
time had never passed.
Merza
is musical itself, for the
nature and for the history.
It is necessary to know it
and to know its surroundings
to realize that. The murmur
of the Deza river that
attenuates in A Carixa; the
loud waterfall of the Toxa
river; the evocation of the
Benedictine monks that gave
life to Carboeiro; the path
to A Brea, where tungsten
ores emerged; the
aristocratic spirit that
comes from the Middle Ages;
the roar of the wind and the
noisy birds in the abundant
wooded vegetation... The
music summarizes all this.”
